The captaincy logic that wins grand leagues

In small leagues, the captaincy case is straightforward — pick the player most likely to score the most points. The floor (median expectation) is what wins the league because the variance of a single-player captain is small relative to the field of eight to twenty entries.

In grand leagues, the field is hundreds or thousands of entries, and the variance dominates. A captain pick with a high ceiling and a moderate floor can win — but a captain pick with a low ceiling and a high floor almost never does. The grand-league question is not "who scores most" but "who scores in the top 5% while the rest of the field captained someone else".

The upside case is the differential — the player most readers have not captained. The differential is not the worst player; it is the player with a high ceiling who happens to be low-owned because of a name-recognition gap, a recent quiet run, or a role change the field has not absorbed yet. The desk surfaces differentials through the form index and the venue splits.

Before every captaincy call, the desk runs four filters: (1) who is most likely to score across all departments, (2) who is the differential pick (low ownership, high ceiling), (3) which pair covers both the safe and the upside cases, and (4) what does the pitch report say about the role that will score most. The captaincy decision is the pair that survives all four filters.

Filter one (most likely to score) usually surfaces the in-form opener or the all-rounder. Filter two (differential) usually surfaces a wrist-spinner or a death-overs bat the field has not noticed. Filter three asks: do those two combine to cover both the floor and the ceiling? Filter four adjusts for the pitch. The desk's captaincy calls are the result of running all four filters.
