Differential picks: the small edges that win leagues
Why the lowest-owned player on a winning team is rarely a famous name. A practical filter for finding differentials — and a note on when to skip them entirely.
What a differential is
A differential is a player selected by less than 10% of the field who has a realistic ceiling to score in the top 5% of points for the match. The differential is not a long-shot — it is a player the form index has flagged but the broader field has not absorbed yet, usually because of a name-recognition gap, a recent quiet run, or a role change.
How to find differentials
The desk's filter for differentials: (1) start with the form index (last five innings, weighted heavier than career numbers), (2) cross-reference with venue splits (does the form hold at this specific ground?), (3) check the role (is the differential's role one that scores on this pitch?), and (4) check ownership (is the pick under 10% in your contest field?). If all four filters clear, the differential is real.
When to skip the differential
Skip the differential when: the contest is small (the floor matters more than the ceiling), the form index has not flagged the pick (you are picking blind), or the role does not fit the pitch (a differential who is a death-overs bat on a green seamer is a wasted differential). The differential is a high-upside play, not a substitute for the form-index picks.
Apply the method
Apply the four-filter method to your contest field. Start with the form index, cross-reference with venue splits, check the role, check ownership. The desk surfaces 3–5 differentials per match week on the fantasy tips page.
Differentials, answered
What ownership % makes a pick a differential?
Under 10% in your contest field. Some contests run larger — for those, under 5% is the differential threshold.
Should I captain a differential?
In grand leagues, yes — captain at least one differential per match week. In small leagues, no.
How many differentials should I have in my XI?
Two to three in a grand-league XI. More than three and the floor is too low.
